When Stephen & Kenna Lucas first laid eyes on what would become El Campo Lost Lagoon in El Campo, TX, they were struck by one overwhelming thought: “Wow, why would anyone want to sell paradise?” The expansive property, with its impressive structures and the promise of a world-class pool, immediately sparked her imagination. Together with her husband Stephen, they saw not only the potential in the land but also the opportunity to create something truly special.
The journey to bring their vision to life was no walk in the park. Over 18 months, they faced challenges, like navigating the annexation process to obtain city sewer and water services. But with persistence and a clear dream in mind, they transformed a former residential home into what is now El Campo Lost Lagoon. Kenna reflects, “We were impressed by the pool and the potential of the existing main building and structures on the property.” The pool itself, once the largest residential pool in the world, now boasts 700,000 gallons of water, a 21-foot slide, waterfalls, a lazy river, and even a swim-up bar.
Kenna and Stephen’s backgrounds gave them the confidence to take on such a massive project. Since 2006, they’ve owned a commercial construction company, and their love for the outdoors stemmed from years of family camping trips. “Stephen grew up taking memorable camping trips with his family, and we continued that tradition with ours. As our business grew, we found property to relocate that business and had enough space to build an RV park, too,” she explains. As they traveled and explored other RV parks, they were inspired to create an upscale vacation destination where families could relax and have fun together. “When we ran across this property for sale, it seemed like it was made for our vision,” Kenna says, reflecting on how everything aligned.
For Kenna, hospitality goes hand-in-hand with family values. The most rewarding part of running Lost Lagoon, she says, is “families that thank us for creating a family fun environment for them.” Watching her own children grow up working at the resort has been a source of pride, especially as they’ve developed a strong work ethic along the way.
One surprising fact that few might know about Kenna is that she initially pursued a career in teaching. “I went to college to be an Agriculture Sciences Teacher,” she shares. “After teaching for a couple of years, I returned home to help my family with our cattle ranch, and eventually, we built the life we have today.” Her experience in agriculture, combined with her entrepreneurial spirit, led to the incredible life she and her family have built at El Campo Lost Lagoon. Stephen’s background is in commercial construction, and as an Electrician. He built several RV parks before taking on this dream project. His expertise and attention to detail have made the resort what it is today.
The resort’s design came together through a mix of the property’s features and years of professional experience. One standout feature is the original AstroWorld sign that sits above the lazy river, a quirky and nostalgic touch that always sparks conversation among guests. “It’s definitely a conversation piece,” she notes. For guests, the poolside experience is a highlight, with live musical entertainment, dancing, games with their beloved mascot Perry, and campfire s’mores to end the day. “Perry always gets the guests out of their seats for some dancing and games,” Kenna says.
And looking ahead, the future is just as exciting. Kenna is thrilled about their upcoming plans to build a long-dreamed-of Putt-Putt golf course and add more cottages to meet the growing demand. “After years of dreaming up the perfect Putt-Putt golf course, we’re finally ready to bring it to Lost Lagoon,” she shares enthusiastically. The transformation of the property has had a significant impact on the local community, too. “Lost Lagoon has contributed to the local economy with taxes, tourism, donations, and job creations,” Kenna notes. Even locals get to enjoy the resort with day passes, making it a beloved part of the area.
Operating such a large and diverse resort naturally comes with its challenges, particularly when it comes to training staff. “Each season starts off fast and furious,” Kenna says. With new software updates or activities, ensuring the team is prepared requires creativity and coordination. Despite the fast pace, Kenna feels fortunate to have a dedicated team. “We have a wonderful team at Lost Lagoon. Some of our employees have been with us for years and return each busy season,” she shares proudly.
For Stephen & Kenna Lucas, each day at El Campo Lost Lagoon is about creating memories. Whether it’s watching the sun set over the pool or welcoming families back for yet another wonderful stay. It’s this commitment to family and fun that has made Lost Lagoon a place where people keep coming back, year after year. “We’re all about family and friendships, and our resort allows us to facilitate lasting memories,” Kenna says, summing up the heart of what drives her and her team.
