These days, staying ahead requires more than just passion, it takes networking and continuous professional development. The George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality has been a launchpad for countless industry leaders, offering the tools and insights needed to stay ahead. National School helps transform potential into success stories. Let’s look at a few recent National School graduates who show just how far professional development and networking can take you.
The OHI Young Professionals Group has members that really understand the transformative power of professional development and the heights it can bring you to. Erica Edmonds, the Professional Development Chair of OHI’s YP Group, recently graduated from Year 1 of National School. This experience deepened her understanding of the “why” behind industry standards and operations. As a third-generation park owner, Ashley Migliaccio’s roots in the industry run deep. But her commitment to professional development is what keeps her growing. Recently elected Co-Chair of OHI’s Young Professionals Group, Ashley is also a Year 1 National School grad. Ollie Gauthier, a Year 1 graduate and Social Chair of the Young Professionals Group, works alongside his mother Joanne at their family park, Hickory Hills.
Joanne’s dedication to growth saw her complete all years of National School. “The best part is the people,” Joanne said. “You can reach out to others, and they genuinely want to help you succeed. The industry is amazing, and there’s always someone willing to share their knowledge.”
Brian Saunders, a Year 1 graduate and former Secretary of OHI’s board, emphasized the value of tackling real-life challenges in this learning environment. “National School trains you to think critically and from different viewpoints. You also learn how to align all aspects of your business under your mission and vision.”
Jim Button is a prime example of how National School not only shapes successful park owners but also cultivates leaders who give back to the community. A graduate from years ago, Jim has served on the OHI Board for many years and is now the Board Chair. As a long-time instructor at National School, Jim combines his vast experience with a passion for mentorship. He’s known as a go-to resource in the industry; always ready to help fellow park owners navigate challenges and opportunities.
Dr. Mark Maciha embodies dedication to both education and the Outdoor Hospitality Industry. With a distinguished 27-year career in the U.S. National Park Service, including roles at iconic locations like Carlsbad Caverns, the Grand Canyon, and Death Valley, Mark brings unparalleled expertise to National School. For over 30 years, he’s been a steadfast instructor at the George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality, helping shape future industry leaders with his wealth of experience. His passion for professional development earned him the honor of being the first designated Honorary Lifetime Member of OHI. Oh, and this year he won OHI’s Awards of Excellence Above and Beyond Award, which is just so fitting.
Selena Kelly-Irvin’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of National School. When she took on the role of park manager at The Mill Casino RV Park, she had no prior experience managing an RV park. Recognizing the need to get up to speed quickly, Selena attended the George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality. Her experience in Year 1 was eye-opening. Selena’s commitment to professional development continued into Year 2, where she expanded her knowledge and network even further. “Year 1 gives you the foundation. Year 2 is like putting up the walls and fixtures; it’s where you learn to operationalize and implement everything you’ve discovered.”
Quilly’s Big Fish RV Park, owned by Katie and her father, showcases how even at your busiest, a commitment to professional development can lead to remarkable achievements. Quilly’s recent recognition as “Small Park of the Year” is no coincidence. Katie’s experience at National School has not only helped her park thrive but also connected her to a supportive network of fellow professionals.
The George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality is the program that opens doors and elevates. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or unlock new opportunities, National School is the place where potential goes to get recognized.
